The Arctic Dawn was commissioned to mark a significant operational milestone: the first-ever deployment of the Apache AH Mk1 to a true cold-weather environment.
In January 2019, 656 Squadron deployed three aircraft to Bardufoss, Norway, operating at 69° North, more than 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The deployment was undertaken to prove the capability of flying and sustaining Apache AH operations in extreme cold-weather conditions.
This painting captures both the technical achievement and the stark atmosphere of Arctic aviation, documenting a moment of modern military aviation history through detailed, representational artwork.
