Commission a Painting
A straightforward, considered approach to commissioning a painting from first idea to finished piece.

Most commissions start with a simple idea and are developed step by step into a finished painting. If you’ve never commissioned a painting before, it might feel a bit unfamiliar but it’s usually more straightforward than people expect.
At its simplest, it’s about taking a subject that matters to you, whether that’s a particular aircraft, a ship, portrait, or a specific moment, and developing it into a finished piece that isn’t otherwise available. Many commissions are given as gifts, especially when the subject carries personal meaning, which makes it something far more considered and lasting than something off the shelf.
For many, it’s something tied to experience or someone they know. Time spent around a particular aircraft or vessel, a career, or simply an interest they want represented properly.
The process is kept clear from the outset, with everything worked through before the painting begins.
The Process
Initial Conversation
It begins with a conversation.
We’ll go through what you have in mind, either by email, message, or over the phone, and establish the direction of the work.
Composition and Sketches
From there, I’ll produce a small number of initial sketches to explore composition. These are used to determine how the piece will sit and ensure everything is working before anything is committed.
Painting Begins
Once a direction is agreed, the size, price, and timeframe are confirmed, and the painting is scheduled in.
At that point, any reference and research is gathered, in many cases the painting is developed from photographs or existing material, depending on what you have available, and the work begins. As it progresses, I may come back to you where needed, but the aim is to keep things clear and moving in the right direction.
The Finished Painting
When the painting is complete, I’ll send through an image for you to review.
If anything needs adjusting, that can be discussed at that stage. Changes beyond the agreed composition may involve additional work and cost, but this is always handled directly.
The intention is that the final piece reflects the subject as it should be and holds together properly as a finished work.
Payment
There is no deposit required.
Payment is made on completion, once the painting is finished and you’re satisfied with it.
As each piece is worked around the agreed brief, everything is established in advance so there are no surprises along the way.
I’m based in the UK and regularly work with clients both locally and further afield.
I have previously worked with individuals, groups, squadrons, regiments and ships
I take on a limited number of commissions each year alongside ongoing work, so availability can vary depending on what is currently in progress.
If you have something in mind, you can get in touch through @paintings@derekblois.co.uk or by calling 07775 606661 and outline it, and we can take it from there. Or if you’d prefer to explore existing work first, you can view available prints here.
FAQs
How long does a commission take?
Timescales can vary depending on the size and complexity of the painting. If you have a specific date in mind, I’ll always try to accommodate it where possible. If timing is tight, I can provide a voucher at no extra cost to give as a gift while the painting is completed.
What sizes are available?
Any size can be accommodated. This is usually discussed early on so the piece suits both the subject and where it will be displayed.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on the size and complexity of the painting. This is discussed and agreed in advance once the composition has been established.
Can changes be made during the process?
The composition is worked through and agreed before the painting begins.
Minor adjustments can be discussed as the work progresses. Changes beyond the agreed composition may involve additional work and cost, but this is always handled clearly.
What can be commissioned?
Though most subjects tend to be Aviation or Maritime related, I paint Portraits, Still Life, Industrial Landscapes, Trains, Buildings, Cars and Vehicles and a host of other subject matters.
Some commissions are based on particular moments or experiences, while others are built around a subject that isn’t otherwise available.
What medium do you use?
All paintings are created using acrylics and/or watercolours.
Does it come framed?
Paintings are supplied unframed, but can be framed if required.
Does size affect price?
Yes — size is a key factor, but complexity also plays a part. A simpler composition will generally be less than something with a more detailed or involved background.
