Warspite and Illustrious

HMS Warspite is a ship I had wanted to paint for many years.

My father served aboard Warspite as a signals boy during the early part of the Second World War, so I have always had a personal connection with the ship and her history.

After completing my painting of HMS Hood, I decided that Warspite would be my next subject. I mentioned this on social media and was contacted by a collector who had previously bought one of my prints. He asked whether I would consider including HMS Illustrious alongside her.

I thought it was a good suggestion, and what had originally been planned as a painting of Warspite alone developed into Warspite and Illustrious.

There is something particularly satisfying about finally painting a subject that I had been considering for such a long time. Warspite’s connection with my father made this a very personal painting for me, while the addition of Illustrious gave me the opportunity to bring two important Royal Navy ships together in the same piece.

Originally painted in acrylic, Warspite and Illustrious combines my interest in naval history with a connection to my own family’s past.
