Silent Destiny tells the story of Horsa glider LJ135 during the Normandy campaign, preserving the memory of one mission and the men whose courage and sacrifice should never be forgotten.
Silent Destiny depicts Horsa glider LJ135 during one of the most perilous phases of the Normandy campaign.
At 0700 on 7 June 1944, LJ135 was flying at the head of Mission Galveston, carrying infantrymen of the 1st Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment and engineers from Company A, 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, both of the 82nd Airborne Division. As the glider attempted to land near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, it suffered the catastrophic loss of a wing. Despite the determined efforts of Flying Officer Richard Mercer and First Lieutenant George Parker to regain control, the aircraft crashed, claiming the life of Richard Mercer and fourteen men from the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment.
Rather than depicting one of the more familiar moments of D-Day, this painting focuses on a single Horsa glider and the men connected with it. Their story represents the extraordinary courage of the glider pilots and airborne troops whose contribution was essential to the success of the Normandy landings, yet whose sacrifices are often overshadowed within the wider history of the campaign.
